Monthly Revenue Shows Consistent Upward Trajectory

The newly regulated iGaming market in Alberta generated CA$122.1 million (US$87.2 million) in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue during its initial months. The Alberta iGaming Corporation reported these figures for the period spanning the market launch on July 13 through September 30. Revenue numbers demonstrated a steady increase across each month of operation.

July recorded CA$22.2 million (US$15.8 million) in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue. August saw this figure nearly double to CA$43.3 million (US$30.9 million). September continued this growth pattern by reaching CA$56.6 million (US$40.4 million). Players generated a total betting handle of CA$2.89 billion (US$2.06 billion) over this three-month window.

Operator Count Surges Following Transition Deadline

The market opened in July with an initial roster of 15 licensed operators. This number grew steadily to reach 24 operators by the end of September. A sharp acceleration in operator onboarding occurred immediately afterward.

Unregulated operators faced an October 13 deadline to enter the regulated framework. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis commission had issued 42 iGaming operator licences by October 24. These licences translated to 52 distinct iGaming sites operating legally within the province.

Alberta iGaming Corporation CEO Dan Keene emphasized the importance of this transition, stating that regulation matters. Keene explained that the regulated market holds approved operators to high accountability standards. He noted that the resulting revenue remains within the province to fund local programs and services.

Casino Games Dominate Player Preferences

Data from September provides a clear view of player activity and product popularity. Casino gaming accounted for 75.6% of the non-adjusted gross gaming revenue during the month. Sports betting followed as the second most popular vertical with 19.5% of the revenue. Live casino products made up the remaining 4.9% of the market share.

The platform recorded 388,585 active player accounts in September. This user base generated an average revenue of CA$146 (US$104) per active account. Keene indicated these early results show that residents value the oversight associated with a regulated market. The regulatory body hopes to continue educating players about the risks of illegal offshore sites and encourage them to use regulated platforms that offer consumer rights and recourse.

Revenue Sharing Model Funds Local Initiatives

Alberta implemented a revenue-sharing model that mirrors the structure used in Ontario. Operators retain 80% of the net iGaming revenue they generate. The provincial government receives the remaining 20% of these funds.

A specific allocation takes place before this percentage split is applied to the gross revenue. The province directs 3% of the gross gaming revenue to First Nations and responsible gambling initiatives. This ensures a baseline level of funding for targeted social programs regardless of the final net revenue calculations.

Our Assessment

Alberta’s regulated iGaming market demonstrated immediate adoption following its mid-July launch. The steady month-over-month revenue increases and a high initial betting handle indicate strong player engagement. A strict October deadline successfully forced unregulated operators into the legal framework, nearly tripling the number of licensed operators in just over three months. The established 80-20 revenue split and mandatory responsible gambling allocations create a structured financial environment for both international operators and provincial stakeholders.
