They expressed strong support for the project, as it is expected to create many new jobs – both during construction and in ongoing operations. One speaker emphasized: “Only this project guarantees a meaningful number of well-paid, unionized jobs.” Supporters believe Manhattan has a strong chance of securing one of the three available casino licences. Without a licence, they argue, a development of this scale at the site would be unlikely.
Concerns from the Theatre Industry
Criticism came mainly from representatives of the theatre industry. They are concerned that a casino could alter the character of the neighbourhood. Mentioned were potential noise issues that could disrupt rehearsals and performances, as well as increased traffic that might inconvenience theatre-goers. One speaker also raised concerns about the possible social consequences of gambling, warning of financial strain on vulnerable populations.
Next Steps and Deadlines
The next public hearing is scheduled for May 28. All applications for one of the three licences must be submitted by June 27. The final awards are expected by the end of the year. Caesars and its partners are now awaiting the next phase of the environmental review and further feedback from the public.
